Finally some significant rainfall across the Sydney region and south along the coast. Some heavy falls occurred in the parched South Coast where water restrictions are about to be issued.
The rain began overnight Friday as thunderstorms streamed in from the northwest. Some hailstorms amongst the many cells that developed and rapidly drifted towards the coast. Most of the more consistent rainfall however occurred on 3rd October. Models seem to indicate a wet pattern and relatively cooler weather at least for the first part of October.
Meanwhile, in contrast, bushfires and heat waves conditions persist in Queensland and parts of northern NSW.

Michael,

Severe storms were intercepted yesterday with storms rapidly developing near Lithgow initially and also east of Mudgee a little later. There were likely two supercells out of this region. We chased the Lithgow region hoping to get onto the cells near Rhylstone though they were developing too quickly and there were also the cells near Lithgow. So we had to contend with the cell near Capertee.
Here is a nice image of a base circulation and dimple of a funnel almost overhead. This coincided with a wind change in the near storm environmental boundary.

Hi Jimmy, I chased with Jason on the same day as you and it ended up quite a long afternoon/evening as storms persisted until midnight. The target was the Clarence Valley but a storm still managed to get going in the usual area SW of Casino. This storm produced microbursts a couple of times during separate pulses. I guess there may have been some locally severe weather under the intense part of the cells however no warnings were issued.
The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent N and NE of Grafton where numerous high based cells with microbursts were observed. It was a great day out with good conversation – certainly needed after 2 weeks of no storms. A couple of stronger cells on the MNC resulted in the BoM issuing severe thunderstorm warnings however they were only current between 6pm and 745pm. Jason and I were located at Lawrence beside the Clarence River for most of the better shots of the night.
