Cold Frost and Showers – Storms Europe / Colorado

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

After some frost eariler in the week, it seems the rain pattern has set back in along the coastal region. Quite cool too. The frost was a little more severe than what you would expect for early June. Great snowfalls thus far in NSW and Victoria.

Meanwhile, the season in tornado alley has really begun to fire from a hailstone perspective with some giant hailstones being reported particularly in some serious supercells in Colorado. The high county in that region really produces some nice supercells and is renound for some serious hailstorms particularly during the latter part of the tornado season. Colorado has also reported some decent tornadoes as well.

Nevertheless, the season has been particularly bad with much less tornadoes reported compared to what is anticipated at this time of the year – apparently the worst since 1996.

Europe has had an incredible number of storms and tornadoes reported from France Germany, Hungary and even Russia! The footage from Hungary trashing the roof is some fo the best I have ever seen on video!

Storm Chasing Classic supercell chase

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Firstly, great news in terms of the temporary visa being granted to Imelda and Kimberly yesterday. We were very surprised since we got this with little fuss! Thanks to the assistance you and David provided in references.

Next step is permanent residency. The pregnancy is going well with the baby due in mid-May – very exciting indeed. The baby is kicking wildly now! Everything in tests seem normal including the heart rate.

In the other news, I must say finally I was really excited about the storm chase last Monday intercepting the classic supercell with very impressive structure! Pity that structure did not last for long before it went into a slow decline. Nevertheless the Sydney area did not have any storms predicted so really it was a marginal situation. I was watching things unfold from my desktop and also watched twice as the storm tried really developed about an hour earlier. Then it basically sent up an impressive explosive updraft and organised rapidly.

Classic supercell hits Lismore to Byron Bay region – giant hailstones

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Tuesday 30th December could not have turned out much better than it did. A classic supercell evolved between Casino and Lismore before tracking over the eastern parts of Lismore, my place at McLeans Ridges then off the coast north of Byron Bay. The structure was incredible. CAPE was calculated at 4000 from the Casino obs of 35/21 at 3pm. No wonder updrafts were like a nuclear bomb in appearance. Some very large hail to 7cm diameter fell at Lismore Heights and Goonellabah with stones to about 4cm at my place.  The thing that struck me the most watching the storm develop from the first congestus of the day to a massive supercell was the very obvious base rotation – certainly have not seen anything as quick as that around here. Not surprisingly, while on chase we saw two very well defined mid-level funnels and another person photographed one under the meso.
