Warm thundery weather 22nd October Bushfires NSW Qld

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

It seems there is a hint of thunderstorms beginning to be in the picture from the 22nd October over eastern NSW and lingering for some time. Obviously this depends on moisture availability. GFS has been very unreliable with predictions of moisture particularly inland around the Central West this season as with other seasons. The coastal areas are struggling with moisture but nowhere near as serious. This means Sydney and further north to the mid-north coast are in for a chance of storms over the coming days.

Meanwhile, bushfires continue to threaten communities over northern NSW and Queensland. I am certainly surprised to see Rockhampton during October getting serious fire behaviour. Personally, I have yet to see bushfires mentioned in the news so far north into the tropics. At least though the dust storms have eased for the time being.

Sydney Dust storm – Incredible massive dust storm covers Eastern Australia

Dust storm - dust piling on window frame of the car

What an incredible sight to awaken to a thick dust storm across Sydneyinfact the whole of NSW, the ACT and Qld. It created a mess right across the Sydney suburbs and also caused disruptions to the airport.

The drought across NSW has deepened and this is a result of a strong upper level system that produced gale force winds with an associated wind shift. The wind shear was sufficient to lift dust which persisted for an extraordinary distance.

A more detailed discussion can be found in the duststorm topic.

Cold Frost and Showers – Storms Europe / Colorado

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

After some frost eariler in the week, it seems the rain pattern has set back in along the coastal region. Quite cool too. The frost was a little more severe than what you would expect for early June. Great snowfalls thus far in NSW and Victoria.

Meanwhile, the season in tornado alley has really begun to fire from a hailstone perspective with some giant hailstones being reported particularly in some serious supercells in Colorado. The high county in that region really produces some nice supercells and is renound for some serious hailstorms particularly during the latter part of the tornado season. Colorado has also reported some decent tornadoes as well.

Nevertheless, the season has been particularly bad with much less tornadoes reported compared to what is anticipated at this time of the year – apparently the worst since 1996.

Europe has had an incredible number of storms and tornadoes reported from France Germany, Hungary and even Russia! The footage from Hungary trashing the roof is some fo the best I have ever seen on video!
