Temperature got down to 5 this morning at McLeans Ridges, NSW which is about as low as it gets here. It reflects the cold airmass which has passed across Southeast Australia with widespread severe frosts in some parts this morning.
The best snowfalls Tuesday night and into Wednesday were largely confined to areas south of the Blue Mountains from what I can tell with some good falls along the southern ranges and alpine areas. A few flurries were reported from the Armidale area too.

Hi Jimmy, Been a much quieter week on the North Coast since the storm late on the 1st January. Enjoyed a two hour lightning show as the line of storms advanced in from the WNW – a not so common direction for storms here. Most of the lightning was in-cloud or otherwise obscured though it was occurring multiple times per second at times. These few pics were taken from home at McLeans Ridges. Very strong damaging winds hit. There’s a lot of tree damage around the district.

Today it is mild with a fresh and gusty S-SE wind blowing. Some isolated showers have occurred. Inland things have fired up west of Moree and further north. Could be quite a significant storm day tomorrow across a large part of NSW.

Tuesday 30th December could not have turned out much better than it did. A classic supercell evolved between Casino and Lismore before tracking over the eastern parts of Lismore, my place at McLeans Ridges then off the coast north of Byron Bay. The structure was incredible. CAPE was calculated at 4000 from the Casino obs of 35/21 at 3pm. No wonder updrafts were like a nuclear bomb in appearance. Some very large hail to 7cm diameter fell at Lismore Heights and Goonellabah with stones to about 4cm at my place. The thing that struck me the most watching the storm develop from the first congestus of the day to a massive supercell was the very obvious base rotation – certainly have not seen anything as quick as that around here. Not surprisingly, while on chase we saw two very well defined mid-level funnels and another person photographed one under the meso.
