Melbourne Hailstorm

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The Melbourne hailstorm does appear to be unprecedented for Victoria in delivering gorilla sized hailstones. Hailstones up to 10cm diameter were reported by a Bureau observer south east of the CBD. The damage to vehicle and roofs in some areas leaves no doubt there was massive hail. Most other suburbs along the storm track appear to be mainly golf ball size. The very heavy rain also caused widespread flash flooding.

The Early Warning Network provided hail warnings via SMS before this HP Supercell moved through the suburbs of Melbourne. Members of this service were able to reduce property losses and move their cars to shelter. Join now: http://www.ewn.com.au

Winter Storms and Australian Severe Weather Association conference

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

It has not rained here for about 4 weeks now which is not all that unusual for this time of year, but still … could do with some rain.

Thunderstorms are active across NSW this morning and should continue over wide areas. Wednesday looks more interesting for NE NSW and SE QLD though the big variable is the amount of cloud cover.

The Australian Severe Weather Association conference kicks off next Friday in Melbourne. Be great to catch up with everyone including you Jimmy! The Dunoon tornado presentation should make a good impression on the audience.

Cold Snowy and Windy for Southeast Australia

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Finally a sigficant cold front for SE Australia after a few weeks of action focusing on Southwest West Australia.

The change should see widespread snowfalls to the Alpine areas – the ski resorts have certainly been waiting for this!.

GFS tips a low off the NSW south coast which may shoot a cold pool up the ranges. We could see some decent snowfalls across the Central and possibly Northern Tablelands.

Besides the snow and rain chances, gales and severe weather warnings are featuring in SA, NSW and VIC already.
