Tropical cyclones, heat waves, storms and snow! January 2010

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

As two tropical cyclone warnings are issued up north – Tropical Cyclone Magda and now ex-tropical cyclone Neville – in contrast heat waves and scorching the south of the continentSydney’s west experiencing 3 consecutive days of 40C or higher temperatures. Lucky the recent rains have made the forests and fields green again that bushfires are not a major threat.

And then of course snow fell during a brief cold snap that passed over southern Australia namely Victoria and southern NSW producing snow over the highlands of the Snowy Mountains. What a month. Now back to the 40C heat!

Incidently, following the two severe storm events prior to Christmas including the Singleton hailstorm, early January was an active period for severe thunderstorms with a few explosive thunderstorm events intercepted.

Record heat wave – a new temperature record for Melbourne of 46.4C! February 7 2009

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Melbourne has experienced its hottest day on record of 46.4C which is not only a February record but an all time record surpassing the January 1939 figure of 45.7C. Furthermore, this record has now exceeded all records of any city around Australia. What an incredible event. The cooler change has hit Melbourne finally.

Here in Sydney, we have had heat for an extended period of time. In fact, it has been above the 30C for much of January and February thus far with some figures nearing and over 40C. It got to 42C today and tomorrow is no difference with similar temperatures expected before a southerly change that will finally ease the searing temperatures.

Record heat wave conditions across south east Australia January 2009

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Michael,

I must say I am bewildered with this particular heat wave. I personally do not recall such a hot January where temperatures have exceed 30C almost every day – and this includes most temperatures being in the mid to high 30s!  And it also is surprising that for a week now the Bureau have been forecasting 43 – 44C for the weekend coming! Wow – that is game by any standards – let alone trying to forecast a day ahead temperatures 43C to 44C!

Severe storm near Lithgow February 4 2009Anyway, prior to this occurring, I have taken any opportunities to chase storms. The most recent storm chase was on the 4th February when Nick Moir and I intercepted a severe storm near Lithgow. This cell literally exploded another level beyond the shallow anvil. A pictures is included here:
