Heat wave conditions November 2009

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It is incredible that we have almost repeated the heat wave conditions Victoria experienced earlier this year which produced the catastrophic bushfires. With 850hPa temperatures of 26 to 28C over the next few days, temperatures are sure to rise into the mid-40’s. Given it is still officially late spring, this is record breaking conditions. Drought conditions continue right across the region and with the heat, we have potentially near catastrophic bushfire conditions with the index nearing 100.

I note that you were able to experience an incredible lightning display Wednesday night.

Rain Storms and Floods NE NSW and SE QLD

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The rain certainly spread to SE QLD and NE NSW since yesterday. The heaviest falls have focused on the Bellingen Valley with totals around 400mm at a couple of places. The Orara, Bellinger and Nambucca rivers are in flood. That’s the 5th flood event for the year at Bellingen and Octobers are not exactly renowned for floods!

72mm at my place (McLeans Ridges, NSW) most of which fell between 11pm and 2am. A number of convergence lines were evident and this meant narrow bands of heavy falls and some areas missing out.

Today is the 6th day in a row of thunderstorm activity which has made up for an otherwise poor start to the season.

Lightning briefly and record temperatures

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Michael,

Record temperatures are likely over eastern Australia which gives rise to the real possibility of early heat this year as has occurred in 1995 and other times in the past.

Rainfall wise though – we have only had 3.4mm in the storm last week with a little lightning thrown in!
