Flooding rains in NSW December 2009

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Finally heavy rains have drenched drought stricken areas of NSW with well over 100mm of rain falling in some regions and more predicted. Some rivers are in flood with a potential flood alert for other rivers. The Hunter Valley and the North West Slopes as well as parts of north eastern NSW are also to be affected by heavy rains.

This all is the result of Tropical Cyclone Laurence. That severe tropical cyclone made all the way inland with continued tropical cyclone warnings which is very unusual.

Giant hailstones then more flooding for Northeast NSW

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

November 5th provided an explosive setup for thunderstorms along parts of the NSW Northern Tablelands and QLD Granite Belt and Darling Downs. Very high instability and dry air aloft combined with an injection of moisture from the southeast. A notable storm just east of Warwick produced hailstones up to 9cm diameter.

The trough persisted over the region and a high positioned to result in another coastal convergence setup – focused yet again on the Coffs Bellingen region. This region has now had 6 floods this year with many centres up to 3000mm of rain YTD. The most dramatic phase of the this system was Friday evening when about 350mm fell on Coffs Harbour in just 8 hours. The Nambucca, Orara, Bellinger, Hastings rivers and Coffs Creek all experienced flooding.

Rain Storms and Floods NE NSW and SE QLD

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The rain certainly spread to SE QLD and NE NSW since yesterday. The heaviest falls have focused on the Bellingen Valley with totals around 400mm at a couple of places. The Orara, Bellinger and Nambucca rivers are in flood. That’s the 5th flood event for the year at Bellingen and Octobers are not exactly renowned for floods!

72mm at my place (McLeans Ridges, NSW) most of which fell between 11pm and 2am. A number of convergence lines were evident and this meant narrow bands of heavy falls and some areas missing out.

Today is the 6th day in a row of thunderstorm activity which has made up for an otherwise poor start to the season.
