As two tropical cyclone warnings are issued up north – Tropical Cyclone Magda and now ex-tropical cyclone Neville – in contrast heat waves and scorching the south of the continent – Sydney’s west experiencing 3 consecutive days of 40C or higher temperatures. Lucky the recent rains have made the forests and fields green again that bushfires are not a major threat.
And then of course snow fell during a brief cold snap that passed over southern Australia namely Victoria and southern NSW producing snow over the highlands of the Snowy Mountains. What a month. Now back to the 40C heat!
Incidently, following the two severe storm events prior to Christmas including the Singleton hailstorm, early January was an active period for severe thunderstorms with a few explosive thunderstorm events intercepted.

The rain certainly spread to SE QLD and NE NSW since yesterday. The heaviest falls have focused on the Bellingen Valley with totals around 400mm at a couple of places. The Orara, Bellinger and Nambucca rivers are in flood. That’s the 5th flood event for the year at Bellingen and Octobers are not exactly renowned for floods!
72mm at my place (McLeans Ridges, NSW) most of which fell between 11pm and 2am. A number of convergence lines were evident and this meant narrow bands of heavy falls and some areas missing out.
Today is the 6th day in a row of thunderstorm activity which has made up for an otherwise poor start to the season.

A sharp upper trough is expected to drop 500 hPa temps to -20 over the Northern Rivers this afternoon. It’s effects can already be seen with showers and storms just off the NSW coast.
There will be no capping so we may end up with clutter and showers through there are good chances of some hail about.
We really need the rain as the dry season has been ridiculously dry this year – well over 3 months of barely any rain.
